Our client is a leading global pharmaceutical company.  They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Medical Director, Exploratory & Translational Development Medical.

 

The Medical Director Exploratory & Translational Development Medical co-leads the Exploratory & Translational Development Therapeutic Area (TA) Team to drive TM (Translational Medicine) and early development efforts (ED) from Stage 1 to Stage 3 by providing expert Translational Medicine, Early Development, TA and clinical development insights, advice, direction, and input to the Drug Discovery Unit and Clinical Science TA leadership.    

Medical Director Exploratory & Translational Development Medical serves a liaison role for clinical development to promote seamless transition between research and development and is responsible for ensuring that the research organization is moving in concert with the defined TA strategy by facilitating the adoption of the TA UNIT-endorsed strategy into target selection, choice of preclinical models and Translational Medicine activities. 

                                   

RESPONSIBILITIES and ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Communicate and implement TA Unit strategy into research and early development; Communicate clinical needs to Drug Discovery Unit to ensure alignment with TA Unit strategy and Pharmaceutical Drug Development needs, and contribute clinical input to aid DDU (Drug Discovery Unit) research portfolio prioritization. Provide Exploratory & Translational Development TA Team recommendations to DDU on go/no-go decisions at stage-ups (S2E, S2L, S3).
  • Works with Exploratory & Translational Development Non-clinical Pharmacology TA lead to develop, and own TA Translational Medicine strategy, including novel Translational Medicine / Early Development approaches and to present the strategy to DDU and TALT (Therapeutic Area Leadership Team) (e.g., EIH studies, back translation, indication-hopping). Coordinate Translational Medicine and ED input from clinicians within PDD (Pharmaceutical Drug Development) to provide supplementary expertise to Pharmaceutical R&D project team.
  • Works with Drug Discovery Unit, TALT and Exploratory & Translational Development Non-clinical pharmacology TA lead to create TA level technology strategy aligned with TA and TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE strategy.  With Exploratory & Translational Development TA Team support inclusion of Therapeutic Area Translational Medicine strategy in Pharmaceutical R&D project plans, including advice on implementation of novel technology.
  • Participate in TALT monthly meetings and represent TM / ED perspective in TALT strategic discussion. Provide a window to Pharmaceutical R&D / Drug Discovery Unit activities and assets nearing Stage 3 to the TA lead and the TALT. Present and reinforce TALT strategy to Drug Discovery Unit Leader and to Exploratory & Translational Development.
  • Attend periodic TA clinical team meetings and meet with TA Leader periodically to align on TA strategy and Exploratory & Translational Development goals
  • Meet periodically with DMSO and Exploratory & Translational Development Non-clinical pharmacology TA lead to align on DDU strategy and Exploratory & Translational Development goals
  • Facilitate translation of TA TM strategy and clinical ED insight to DDU project teams through oversight of Exploratory & Translational Development Clinical liaison, and support GDT in developing Translational Medicine strategy for IDS / CDP as needed
  • With DDU (DDU leader and DMSO) and TA Lead, facilitate project prioritization decision for greater Exploratory & Translational Development involvement
  • Pass-off of asset to Global Development Team leader at GDT kickoff (and serve as ongoing resource to GDT leader after S3)
  • In support of Exploratory & Translational Development Non-clinical Pharmacology TA Lead, help co-ordinate Exploratory & Translational Development TA Team assessment and review of Business Development identified opportunities as requested.  Provide clinical review/opinion on in license opportunities as required and requested by DD lead.  In collaboration with Exploratory & Translational Development Non-clinical Pharmacology TA Lead, coordinate resources for extra Pharmaceutical R&D project team support for BD review.
  • Provide Input to performance review of Exploratory & Translational Development TA Team members
  • Actively manage and participate in industry and academic consortia
  • Establishes collaborative relationships with relevant areas of expertise inside and beyond Takeda – regulatory affairs, external experts, academic institutions
  • Co-lead or lead the biannual TA TM strategy meetings and annual R&D-wide TM meetings 
 

We seek candidates with the following qualifications: 

 
  • MD or MD/PhD with a minimum 5 years of  translational medicine and early development experience; recognized expertise in translational medicine: Clinical development experience should be in academia and/or industry including trial design and implementation, documentation / filing; Preclinical / translational scientific research experience should include bench experience
  • Minimum 2 years of pharmaceutical/CRO health-related consulting company/academic industry experience
  • Experience in leading and managing teams within the industry context
  • Distinctive ability to engage in discourse on innovative drug discovery from early preclinical through to late-stage development
  • Excellent leadership, team management, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Expertise in one of cardiovascular, metabolic, CNS, or immunology/inflammatory disease
  • Bilingual of great value (Japanese and English)

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: National and international travel required.
